"Enigma" comes from a lifelong interest in Egyptian
culture and from a two week trip to Egypt two years ago. Being
in the midst of and experiencing the painting, sculpture and Architecture
first hand was indeed overwhelming. Particularly dramatic were
the Pyramids, the tomb of Ramses at Abu Simbel and the Sphinx,
all which are represented in "Enigma".
The free use of hieroglyphics on the boarder activates the surface
and entices one to move around the image. The stag and falcon
represent the human and animal duality of the Egyptian gods.
Two elements of architecture appear in the capitals over Ramses
and the portrait of a queen as well as on either side of the outer
boarder. From the warmth of the surrounding color the Sphinx becomes
a stark black accent in the center of the image, the true enigma.
