Tuttle
was born in Lake Forest, Illinois, in 1890. After some time as
an English master at the Groton School, he became Master of Davenport
College at Yale University, and Curator of Prints at the Yale
Art Gallery. In 1926, he married a Rochestarian, Ms. Isabelle
Hollister. She recalled her husband sitting in a blind for days
on end near the shore of Lake Superior, sketching and photographing
ravens in preparation for this print. The edition was printed
posthumously, as Tuttle died in 1946. Shortly after his death,
the Memorial Art Gallery arranged a memorial exhibition of his
work.

Schultheiss was born in Nuremberg in 1885. He studied at the School
for Arts and Crafts in Nurenberg, and the Royal Academy in Munich.
In 1940, he came to the U.S. and became a citizen in 1945. This
was a renowned printmaker primarily with etching and engraving,
painting, and book illustration. He received many awards and honors
for his work, and was a member of the National Academy of Design,
among others.
