Costigan was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1888. He was
on his own sine the age of 14 and was a self-taught artist. Later,
He was elected to the National Academy of Design in 1928. His
work can be found in collections and institutions such as the
Art Institute of Chicago, the Rhode Island School of design, the
Metropolitan Museum of American Art, and the Library of Congress.

Mueller taught for 17 years at the Leipzig Graphic Arts Academy
and was a major influence in European wood engraving. In 1937,
he came to the U.S. and taught at Columbia University and at Bennington
College. Lynd Ward spoke of his woodcuts
"No other
artist of our time has explored the possibilities of the medium
so widely or achieved so much in it."
